Information "My best work is often almost unconscious and occurs ahead of my ability to understand it." - Sam Abell

I was hooked on black and white photography years ago, the first time I saw some Ansel Adams photographs of Yosemite National Park. I couldn't believe the subtlety possible in a monochrome medium. Robbed of distracting colours, the composer is force to create a focus point from texture, shadow and form. Suddenly less becomes more, and what you leave out of the frame can be as important as what you include. I tend to take photographs instinctively. Technical analysis of composition and other considerations is not my forte. I would never send one of my images to be analysed by a magazine and judged along commercial lines.

I suppose that means I will never be a "professional", because then that would change the nature of what photography means to me - I want to photograph what I want to and not what someone pays me to. Similarly I either like an image by gut instinct or I don't - the judgement usually happens immediately. I also realised a long time ago that what makes a great image is not what-s in front of your eyes, but what comes out of your head. Some people may like what comes out of my head and some may not, but ultimately I'm out to please myself.

"I have never taken a picture I've intended. They're always better or worse." - Diane Arbus
